Tobacco Smoking Cessation
by Sendero Health Plans


Sendero Health Plan members are provided a free smoking cessation assessment and materials on how to quit smoking through the Up in Smoke (US) program. The US program includes information on referral service that link members to local and national resources. Sendero endorses and recommends referring IdealCare members to the following programs for assistance with efforts to stop smoking:

Any CHIP member can receive up to $50 per member per year by being part of the Smoking Cessation Program. Purchase an Over-the-counter smoking cessation from a store and present the receipt to Sendero Health Plans for payment. This benefit is available to all CHIP Members.

Program Goals

The primary goal of the tobacco cessation program is to decrease the use of tobacco products among the Sendero Health Plans population (to include the use of smokeless tobacco, cigars and pipes) through appropriate pharmacotherapy and referral to community programs.

Interventions

• Smoking Cessation Assessment forms are distributed annually (email, SMS, mail) to all health plan members and included in the new member welcome packet.
• Call center numbers are provided for members who want information or referral sources for help on how to quit smoking.
• If you are a cigarette smoker > 40 years of age you should contact your primary care doctor to schedule a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) for early detection of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

These medicines can help you stop smoking. They are not addictive and they are covered by your health plan.
• Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) includes the nicotine patch, gum, and lozenge, which are available without a prescription. NRT helps you with cravings by giving your body a small, steady amount of nicotine.
• Zyban (Wellbutrin SR) is a pill that can help with cravings and other withdrawal symptoms. You start taking it about one week before you quit smoking. Your doctor must prescribe it.
• Chantix is a pill that helps with cravings and other withdrawal symptoms. It also blocks the part of the brain that gives smoking its kick. Your doctor must prescribe it.
